# Guide / What is Markdown?

When you copy an AI answer and “**” and “##” appear

You pasted an answer from ChatGPT or Claude into Word or an email, and ** and ## came out as they are. That is not a fault — AI answers are written in Markdown.

The fix depends on where you are pasting. Here is what to do for each, and a way to avoid deleting the marks at all.

## Bottom line

**The monthly plan works out cheaper.** Over one year it looks like this.

| Plan | Per month | Over a year |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Monthly | $9.80 | $117.60 |
| One-off | — | $148.00 |

### Things to watch

- Past two years, the **one-off** price wins

Why the marks appear

An AI answer is written as text with marks in the first place. Where it says **important**, the chat window turns that into important in bold for you.

If the place you paste into does not know how to do that, you see the original marks. These are the common ones.

How each one is written is covered in What is Markdown?.

First, check how you are copying

The same answer can paste differently depending on how you copied it.

  • The copy button under the answer usually hands over text with marks (Markdown), so the marks tend to show where you paste.
  • Selecting the text with the mouse and copying usually hands over the bold and headings as you see them, so it pastes into Word or Google Docs in shape.

If you are pasting into Word or an email, try selecting and copying first. Behaviour differs between services and app versions, so if that does not work, move on to the methods below.

Pasting into Word

  1. In the chat window, select the part you want with the mouse and copy it
  2. Paste it into Word

Bold and headings usually come through in shape. If the marks still appear, asking the AI again is the sure way.

Rewrite that answer in plain prose, without Markdown marks.

When you need a table, select just the table and copy it; it pastes as a Word table.

Pasting into Google Docs

Google Docs can take Markdown as it is.

  1. Open Tools → Preferences and tick Enable Markdown
  2. Copy the answer with the copy button
  3. Right-click in the document and choose Paste from Markdown

It arrives with the marks already turned into headings and bold.

Pasting into email or chat

Most email and messaging apps do not render Markdown. The quick way is to have it written without marks from the start.

Do not use Markdown marks; write it so I can paste it straight into an email.

If asking each time is a chore, put it in the setting each service offers for how it should respond.

Keep the marks, and put the answer somewhere that reads them

Everything so far was about removing the marks. There is another way: do not remove them, and paste into an app that shows Markdown in shape.

The editor at the top of this page is exactly that. Copy an AI answer with the copy button and paste it in: headings, bold and tables take shape on the spot. The marks are not gone — move the cursor next to them and they come back, ready to edit.

For answers you want to come back to, or documents you will keep working on, this is the easier form to keep.

  • Tables and lists do not fall apart
  • You can retype what you want to change, right there
  • It is a .md file, so you can hand it back to an AI

When you want to be sure to get it with the marks, ask like this.

Write the answer in Markdown and put the whole thing in a single code block.

Text inside a code block copies with its marks intact.

Common questions

Can I remove all the marks at once?

In Word, Find and Replace can swap ** and ## for nothing. Tables and lists will not get their shape back, though, so asking the AI to rewrite it without marks gives a cleaner result.

Tables fall apart when I copy them

A table is written as text separated by |. Select and copy it into Word, or use Paste from Markdown in Google Docs; either way it becomes a table.

Maths turns into text like \frac

Maths is written in LaTeX. Like Markdown, it only takes shape where it is understood. In Monoshiri Note, maths wrapped in $ is typeset. Maths written inside a table cell stays as marks, though.
